« on: March 07, 2011, 02:12:38 PM »
Can I do a .msstyles file only with a simple drawing program, like Paint, Adobe Photoshop/illustrator and others? ???

With a tool named skinstudio you can edit them with paint or any other image editor

By the way: msstyles is something for windows, so it's not fitting this section

Google for Msstyles Editor. Skin Studio is one application. There are plenty of forums specialising in this.

I remember Stardock makes a good .msstyles editor. You mentioned doing this with standard picture editing software. This is not possible. I don't know if you realize this, but msstyles is the file type for windows themes. It is not a picture format (although, it is probably an archive containing pictures).

.msstyles files are dlls.

they can be opened with Resource hacker, and their inner images can be extracted to a directory; then paint, or any picture editor can be used to modify those images and they can be reinjected into the dll.

I tried SkinStudio. it works in gif, I think... but it needs 15 of virtual memory. But my computer has 15,without the variety of operations always running. So, finally, it has 8 of "virtual memory".

I think he means "Gigaoctets"... (Gigabytes in the English speaking world.) Anyhow, it is a simple matter to increase the size of a paging file. (unless your hard drive is ridiculously full) More important to have enough real memory.

''they can be opened with Resource hacker''

What is ''resource hacker''?
Is it a program?
If it does, where can I find it?

What is ''resource hacker''?

google

Yes it is a program. It's not designed specifically for changing themes, of course.
