I try to update and nothing happens after i restart now every time i log in i get a box telling me to activate windows now and the copy I'm using is not genuine. What does that mean?
At one time it was tested to be legitimate, - Right?

There is an issue where if you do not use your PC or keep Vista updated over time you may get that message.

If you can not resolve the problem, contact Microsoft.

Without the details, I can only guess.
      This was a home built?
Wa the CD a standard retail item?
Actually, a full install of Vista is a DVD. There are different versions of it. It should have a part of the rim with a hologram.

Here is an idea. Find a good Hard drive in your spare stuff. Put it into your machine. Install Vista from the DVD by booting from the DVD. Use the number that came with the DVD.  Even without the updates, it should give you some time to activate the new installation..

Look this over and see if it applies to you.

Or borrow a proper Microsoft Vista DVD(not Dell, HP, etc).
A proper Vista DVD contains all Vista versions.
The Product Key determines which Vista version gets installed.
This seems to say it is OK to borrow a DVD and install it. The product key makes your install legitimate.
