Right-click on My Computer, choose Properties, click on the Advanced tab, click the Settings button under Performance, and under the Visual Effects tab place a checkmark in the box that says "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop.

You want that box checked, Dave, not unchecked. Be sure to click Apply. Let me know.

It was already checked. I unchecked and rechecked and the shading is still there. Please help!

Yes, this is Windows XP. I might not be describing this good enough. I'm trying to get rid of the colored box that surrounds the desktop icon text. i.e...there is an icon for "my computer", and there is a colored box that surrounds the "my computer" text.

      1. Right click on My Computer
      2. Properties
      3. Advanced Tab
      4. Performance section
      5. Settings button
      6. Visual Effects tab

      Tag whatever options you prefer.

Nothing seems to be working. I've tried everything you all have suggested,  but the box remains. Any other options?
