Thanks Geek-9pm that has a lot of information directly about my problem, and possibly a new answer to it.
Its interesting that my Dell actually accepted the Sata drive quite readily and saw it in the bios as WD 5000... so on then, because as I remember, I bought the Sata and therefore I must have had the disk at that time to install Windows XP as the operating system. I have been using it ever since and that now is over 2 years that I can think of.

I changed that all back to where it all works. (Maybe I'll take that challenge in the morning when I,er, wake up)

I went back to jason2074's reply and focused on doing the steps more carefully from this link and suprise surprise it seems to have progressed to what I would call "A SUCCESS". ;D (| :|| O:)

So far I have tried to download Adobe updates, that previously, would instantly fail (with a little code in the box) and installed a webcam from Logitech, to test the installer. Both have been successful, installing completely and appear operational.

I am thinking now that going through your link jason2074, with a bit more care (and a lot less alcohol)
has worked for my problem. Thank you once again for your researching it.

I'll have to test it over the next few days to confirm that it is resolved.

Thank you to everyone for their input. ImnoGuru  ;D

Well it all seems to be stable so far.

Now, does anyone have any suggestions as to how I might be able to test it, just so I can confirm the problem has been resolved?
I did some updates from Microsoft and installed a couple of little (I dont care programs) and the results have been very positive so far.

Maybe I should try to re- install Microsoft essentials and see where that gets me?

      Thank you ImnoGuru.

Thanks Geek-9pm for those links. I have Macrium Reflect on this computer and did an image of the drive when it looked likely that I was going to have to move house a little while ago. ( I still have the original Macrium backup on my external drive).

Unfortuneately I couldnt get the image to work on my computer because I needed to install PE and at that time I had already lost the ability to download anything.... like PE.
So not much use jumping horses to use something else if the result is going to be the same.

I have the Macrium Reflect backup and maybe now I actually have cured my MSI problem, I can get this PE thing installed and working.
I'll just have to research PE to find out more about what it is and how to use it.

To you guys in ComputerHope (The Mentors, Genius, Prodigy, Specialist, Eggheads and the list goes on) using these programs may be second nature, but ImnoGuru is a mere mortal apprentice and is shaky with out his training wheels. :)

Thank you for your words of encouragement and confidence in my ability patio.  ;D

When I think about it, I do have a lot more skills in this area than most of the other people in my group of friends.
Maybe thats why they keep asking me to fix their stuff Hahahaha.

Back to this, do you think it is a good idea to install Microsoft Essentials now to test the installer? or Is there a different way to test it out?

D'Oh, just noticed that computer has come up with a small window saying "Some Windows files have changed. Click here to... sorry cant remember the rest and its gone now.

Everything seems to be stable still and I just rebooted it again and there doesnt seem to be any adverse effects.. (so far)

Thank you everyone for your support and comments.

I am reasonable comfortable to say that this has been resolved.

So far I had done updates from microsoft, the automatic update feature is now working well, I have downloaded several programs and installed them successfully and are fully operational.

I have run scans of Malware Bytes and Superantispyware programs and the result has come back with a clear drive from all sources.

You never know I might have to change my name sometime soon in the future to BuddingGuru... Hahaha.
