    Spam email virus in hotmail.....
    « on: August 05, 2011, 08:37:56 AM »
I have hotmail as my email and since yesterday either a virus or hacker has been using my email account to spam emails to every contact in my list. It has happened twice since yesterday and the reason I know is because some of those emails are coming back undelivered.

The emails themselves say:how have you been doing? I just wanted to share this with you , I'm doing pretty well Just have a read...

then they give a link which I have not tried to click on. They also contain an attachment that I HAVE NOT clicked on also.

Things I have done to fix this problem:

    1. Ran combofix and saved a log of it.

    2. Ran ccleaner and deleted all unnecessary cookies.

    3. Ran super anti spyware which came out clean and saved a log of it.

    4. Ran malawarebytes which came out clean and saved a log of it.

    5. Ran hijackthis and saved a log of it.

    6. changed my password for hotmail

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Hello and welcome to Computer Hope Forum. My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer.

    1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
    2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
    3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
    4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
    5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
    6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
    7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.

You have two firewalls running: AVG Firewall and COMODO Firewall. One will have to be disabled because running two or more firewalls can cause conflicts.
The logs look ok. Have you had anymore trouble since you changed your password? Your gmail account must have been hacked.

I don't know much about AVG firewall but if it's like AVG anti-virus, it's a resource hog. I use Comodo myself.
It would appear that changing the password did the trick. Just make sure that it is a difficult password.  A four letter password can be cracked in about 18 mins.
