Vista cant check for updates

I have a vista laptop that says it cant check for updates and tells me to click an icon on the taskbar to fix the problem. Unfortunately, this has yet to work. I have checked for viruses and examined the settings. Everything is set up correctly to receive updates at 3 am, so what could be the problem?
