    how can you detect if the hardrive is not working?

    You could go to http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/Testdisk to boot a HDD diagnostic test. If it is not detected in the BIOS you could slave it to another computer to check.

    Go to the website of the hd manufacturer, download their diagnostic utility, burn it to cd, boot to it and run it.
