Word 03 suddenly not opening in Vista ultimate

I am running MS Office 2003 on top of Vista ultimate on an HP with 4G Ram and about 200G free disk space. Approximately early October word began to "stop working" immediately upon opening.  Outlook, Excel are still functioning.   ESET Security & super anti spyware have been up dated and run as well as a dated version of Malware bites.  The latest service packs are installed for both vista and office.  Office has been reinstalled.

Word does appear to function if we go to a restore point in September but then fails after a day or two (presumably when an automatic update happens).

Is 03 still supported by Microsoft?

1. go to RUN from your start button
2. in the field type command
3. A black popup window will appear
4. at the prompt (flashing | ) type in cd\
5. this will take you to your root directory for the c drive
6. At the c:\> prompt type bcdedit.exe /set nx OptOut
7. Close all open windows
8. Reboot your computer
9. Try to open your Office application again
10. Don’t freak out when you get that same “do you want
to run in safe mode?” Popup again.
11. answer yes
12. If the application opens – close down office
13. reopen the office application again - it should now open
normally
This worked for me; I sure hope it fixes your concern too!

Maybe this:

Run CMD to dos prompt and type "winword.exe /a" if your program work as expected you could have some kind of addin or template corruption

I just realized you have to cd to that directory. Ah Just try the below solution first.

To delete the Word Data registry key, follow these steps:

    Exit all Office programs.
    Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
    Locate the following registry subkey, as appropriate for the version of Word that you are running:
        HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ Office\11.0\Word\Data
    Click Data, and then click Export on the File menu.
    Name the file Wddata.reg, and then save the file to the desktop.
    Click Delete on the Edit menu, and then click Yes.
    Exit Registry Editor.
    Start Word.

If this doesn't work, load the Wddata.reg file to restore it.
