Perhaps you could provide a little more information.

What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

What type of system? What type of sound card?  Is the problem in all apps or just one?

Look in Device Manager - any yellow or red symbols?

      I see.
First time setting up speakers on this computer.  PC works fine, no virus or anything.
It is Gateway, Vista. Realtek sound card. The problem is on all apps.
No yellow or red symbol in device manager.
Audio manager icon is red. I don't know if that matters.

Go back to device manager and expand your Audio controller. Right-click and choose scan for hardware changes or toggle between enable and disable option.

        Thanks buddy.
I tried what you said and it did not work.  Then I realized that this is a PC I have not used in a year and a half.
So I updated it with SP1.  It must have taken 4hours to update.  After that audio came back.
