I'm a curious web design student
    « on: January 28, 2012, 04:13:52 PM »
I'm taking a web design class right now. The class has taught how to make basic web pages, but it doesn't cover how to make large-type websites like YouTube or Computer Hope or...Memebase. Could someone explain this kind of stuff to me?

    • Implementing a search bar that will search the site
    • Allowing user submissions where things can be uploaded by different people, but the pages look the same except for the stuff uploaded by a user

Is this what PHP is for? I only know HTML & CSS and how to make a website by a page-by-page basis. Outside of those, I have no idea what other web programming languages are for or how to make "large" websites.

Yep, you're talking about PHP. This forum runs on PHP.

Basically anything that's user generated needs server side programming - PHP, ASP, ASP.NET, JSP etc.

You could try a package such as Drupal or OsCommerce to get a taste of the whole picture without having to actually know any languages.
