Firefox and IE are operating just fine, and it is just google chrome, which I have installed and uninstalled and reinstalled relentlessly.
Please help, I'm getting desperate.  :-\

Does this immediately happen upon opening Chrome or when trying to view certain websites?

It immediately happens upon opening Chrome.
It shows "Sending request..." at the bottom, then the error.

I have Chrome installed on my laptop but have not used the browser much.  Wish I could give you specific suggestions on solving this but I can not.  Have you tried an Internet search?  Here are Google results: http://www.google.com/search?client=opera&rls=en&q=Google+chrome+Error+118+(net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT)&sourceid=opera&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&channel=suggest

Well, why continue the struggle to fix Chrome?  If you want another browser in addition to IE and Firefox, I recommend Opera

I really liked Chrome, Firefox and IE aren't that good.
Thanks for your suggestion, but I am trying not to clutter up my disk.

Then, remove Chrome and install Opera.  If you want to try Opera without installing it on your hard drive, you can run a portable version off a flash drive.  You can get it at http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/opera_portable.  Keep in mind the portable version may be slower in launching than a regular version installed on your hard drive.  But, once launched, it will give you the same Opera experience as the regular version.
