    W98 cabs and winzip32.exe and re-install
    « on: July 30, 2012, 03:16:47 PM »
I have an old computer of 512MB and want to reinstall the OS. The Cabs files and key are on the hard drive. When trying to open cabs 74 I get a message saying it can't find the winzip file. Someone on another forum cloned his 98, but I don't know if it is SE or just what. Could I use it to straighten it out and then go back and use the original CABS files to reinstall, or will it wipe out the original cab files? Thanks.

If you can determine if you have the SE version installed you can do a non-destructive repair...which basically means all your apps and data are not touched...

To do so go to the Root folder of the existing HDD and re-name win.com to win.old...
Then boot to the Win98 CD and proceed with the install...

    Best of Luck.

Yes I had the SE installed.

What is the HDD and how do I boot the CD? Sorry, I'm not much help here.

My cabs are under windows\options and a subfolder so there is no win.com. I could do a search for it.

I only have a 98 disc, does it have a repair only section? I would still like to keep the SE cabs on there so how would I do it? Thank you.

It won't be in the folder you mentioned...
