PayPal destroys Google Wallet
« on: March 02, 2013, 08:11:30 PM »
The full headline is:
PayPal destroys Google Wallet, MasterCard, Square, and Visa in digital wallet study
This might be just PR. Bit you want to take it seriously. PayPal is NOT a banking institution regulated by the government.

The good news, if you’re PayPal, is that almost three quarters of Americans know about you and your digital wallet solution. The bad news is that under half of them really understand what a digital wallet is.

No, it is bad news. You can get ripped off. I just lost $45. Twp dfays ago.

Some here may recall that PayPal in the USA has had suits because they are not under the same scrutiny of Federal law for banks.

What did Pay Pal take out of your wallet?

Interesting.

you lost 45 dollars from Paypal, in some way that you don't describe.

According to my bank statements, however, I've "lost" around $500 in total just from the monthly fees of my bank account.

I found the "lost' $45. It was from a dubious vendor that hid the change in such a way I will not be able to make a claim against him.  Shame on me.

I wrote a e-mail asking about the charge and they were not able to identify the source. I had spent $45 with web hosting company that promised the moon and I got a sea shell. The only way I know it was them is the amount was exactly y $45. So I guess it must have been them.

Sorry about the $500 you lost in interest,. But at least you know who took it.

People get ripped off just the same through credit union and major banking / credit institution accounts also. It's not just a PayPal issue. It's a commerce issue and happens worldwide.

A few months back my bank let a company run an insufficient funds transaction through 6 times. And that is after I had already complained about the first notice of an insufficient funds transaction. All I got was a "sorry we didn't catch it in time" excuse. It happens. Sucks but it happens...

And NSF charges have actually quadrupled in a very short time here in the States...

So i imagine 6 of them added up to a hefty sum...

It got expensive real quick. The company knew very well what they were doing too. Once the first NSF came back they ran it through again and again. 6 times in 24 hours.

I called them a few other much more colorful things. I got some of it dropped. Just not as much as it should have been.

I don't get why banks charge so many fees. I have a no fee chequing account, and that makes sense though. Banks use our money and invest it in something or loan it out to make a profit. Do they really need to ding us both ways?

You have a minimum balance requirement to avoid fees, right?

My bank recently restructured their checking accounts; they reduced the number/types of checking accounts.  I had to decide which of the new account types I wanted to switch to during their transition period for getting all accountholders switched over to one of the new accounts.  As it turned out, I have a better situation now than I had before this change.  By showing proof that I'm a military veteran, the minimum balance requirement was waived.  I've also been told that if I use an ATM at a bank other than one from my bank to withdraw cash and a fee is charged by that bank, my bank will reimburse that fee.  This is nice because my bank does not actually have a branch office nearby; the closest one is about 8 miles away.

I believe many people could benefit by switching from a bank to a credit union for checking.  Credit unions now offer nearly all the services that banks offer and usually with lower fees.

Re: PayPal. I do have a PayPal account that I use if I buy or sell something on eBay or maybe some other infrequent transaction. It's worked OK for me.

No minimum balance - there are no fees (when I bank with them). The only time I get charged fees is if a retailer charges debit fees or if I need to use a different bank's ATM.

I've actually been very lucky with my banking. I use a credit union for my savings and don't pay fees, and if I keep putting money into it then I get a yearly dividend too.

I use PayPal to pay for stuff online, especially since I don't have a credit card. Even when I do get one, I'll probably continue to use it because of its security.

Only issue I have had with Paypal was a monthly subscription that i cancelled and although cancelled I kept getting billed. The fix to this since paypal wasnt much help was to close the acct that was tied to this paypal acct since I had it linked to my checking acct and open another acct. Fortunately it was also around the time that I had to order new checks anyways, so it worked out well. The problem was instantly solved and I was only out $20.

Whereas I have had issues like this with a credit card and the credit card company was able to resolve the issue and credit my account for the wrongful transaction. Currently dealing with a wrongful transaction now that occurred somehow at bestbuy. I never agree to get the subscriptions for magazines that they state at every sale, and the cashier must have hit a wrong key or intentionally rang me up for Times Magazine at $80 a year. Started getting the magazine and thought my wife ordered it. She said she didnt, and then I looked at my credit card statements that I rarely look over and just make a payment and saw it 3 months prior, just before christmas hitting my credit card when everything else (gifts etc) purchased at the time covered up an $80 fee that went without notice.

As far as banks go, i have been dealing with 2 different banks for their benefits. One has better loan offerings, % yield interest, and only a $100 minimum to avoid $2 a monthly fee, so I have savings over there, and while that bank has a monthly fee for checking, I use another bank for my checking that they have free checking as long as you have automatic deposit. As well as I agreed to a program where if a check ever is going to bounce to charge me only $5 per check and notify me by phone which was a promotion when I joined with them that lasts as long as I hold checking acct with them. And best of all they are not far appart if I have to move money. So I dont have any banking fees using the best of both banks with my banking needs while anyone who would deal with only one or the other would get hit up with fees.

I also have a PayPal Debit MasterCard which works like a credit card when spending in you get 1% cash back on purchases. I end up with some mad money in my PP account a few times a year so it's convenient.

This is really interesting, PayPal is shrewd! Now that Google Wallet is on the scene, is a normal wallet even required? Pay without cash or charge card in hand, securely and safely.
I'm sure google would be more than happy to keep your Birth certificate. SIN number, and innumerable other personally identifiable documents "safe" for you.

Of course they might "accidentally" sell it to interested third parties and stick it in a TOS.

This is still a current topic. Here is a very recent blimp.
How PayPal Can Succeed Where Google Wallet Failed
The link is to Forbes. Denée Carrington says:
Quote
...
Today, PayPal launched a redesign of its mobile digital wallet in the US, Australia, Canada, China, Hong Kong, Japan and the UK. Although the digital wallet marketplace welcomes new or evolving competitors regularly, others – like Google Wallet- have gone back to the drawing board. To date, no third-party wallet provider has yet to achieve “broad-scale adoption” with both consumers and merchants, or, said differently, “success” with proximity or in-person mobile ....

PayPal has rolled out a lot of changes this year. They are now a mix between a virtual retail business office, a credit card company and bank account. You can deposit checks directly into your PayPal account and take payments by credit/debit card with PayPal Here.

I had them send me the PayPal Here card reader since it's free and out of curiosity. Just install the PayPal Here app and your ready to swipe cards. Watch out though. When you swipe a card it finishes the transaction automatically. I swiped my bank debit card and lost 0.03 cents to the transaction fee. OOPS! :-\ ;D

Be very, very careful about anybody that deters your personal information.

In addition to fraudulent changes, there is the greater risk of identity theft. In the current state of things, you have to protect your own identity and recover it yourself. Current law does not give enough help to victims of identity theft.
In some places, you can get a free credit report without jeopardizing your credit information. But making a new credit application may cause you harm. Before you make an application online, take to a real person in your  community that is well   informed on the subject.

I did have an issue with PayPal, but I still use them and I check my account from time to time. Avoid subscriptions, if possible.

What does that mean?
Sorry, meant to say do not give a lot of personal info to firms you do not know. An example of this is as site that claim simple information to help with security is requested. Such items might  be:
What was the name of your High School?
What is the name of your pet?
What is the name of the hospital where your whee born?
Hos may appear to be harmless questions, but the info may help criminals to form a profile for you.
Using a modern computer network, the simple info can be turned into a seed that goes in a different directions. The firm deters your information, in that they make it go in the opposite direction from what you thought.
