    Are using Windows 2000?
Some wireless adapters do not work with Windows 2000.
Does the adapter work OK on your XP system?

Inspiron 2500 is Pentium III, circa 2003.  Your Linksys WPC54G came in different hardware versions.  Make sure you get the correct driver for the version you have.  Win2k does not have WiFi capability built-in, it would need more than the Linksys Driver, it needs the Linksys software, too.  WinXP has WiFi but installing the software will turn it off.

downloaded the wireless adapter. I am having problem connecting to the internet. When I open the adapter program it shows signal strength but it says you are connected to a access point but internet cannot be found.I go to my internet connection and it shows  connection and when I open the properties up it shows the connecting using this wireless adapter. In the componets check are used by this connection are
          client service for netware
          client for Microsoft networks
          odyssey network services
file and printer sharing for Microsoft networks
          netbeui protocol
          network moinitor driver
          realtek eapp[kt protocol
          aegis protocol (iee 802.1x]v2.4.5.0
          nwlink NetBIOS
          nwlink ipx/NetBIOS compatible transport protocol
          internet protocol (tcp/ip)

          under the authentication
enable network access control using IEEE 802.1x is checked
eap type  smart card or other certificate under the properties there is nothing checked.

the authenticate as computer when computer information is available is checked other option not checked is authenticate as guest when user or computer information is available.

not sure where to go from here to be able to connect to the internet .
