Is there a way to run the old Windows Works on Windows 8?    I have my old HHD in a case and can find the program but am unable to run it.   all I can do is see it listed as there?

Is this the same program you asked about in your other post?

Windows Works has to be installed on an OS. The only effective  way to run it is on the old computer. Which leads to this conclusion; when you have an old program you like very much, maintain the computer one which it was installed.  :)

Windows Works has been discontinued.  What component of it did you want?  If a word processor, WordPad has been bundled with Windows through numerous versions of Windows.  If you want a word processor with more features than WordPad, you could try AbiWord or the free, downloadable Open Office (no longer under development but can still be downloaded) or LibreOffice.  The latter two include spreadsheet and other components found in certain versions of MS Office.

Thanks to those who replied.    I have used Windows Works with my seven year old computer (Vista) until there were board problems that required getting a new laptop - so I ran it as long as I could.
I use the Word program and spreadsheet for several nonprofit volunteer groups and just would like to continue to not have to redo everything.   Sounds like I'll need to download free software to access those files????   Suggestions on options?
The other post referred to software that is downloadable to Windows 7 but not listed as Windows 8.  Includes Quicken, printer (Brother), and several minor programs but I do not have the discs for all of them, though I bought them.   The version of Quicken 2010 was Windows 7.   I will need to get financial information from there.    Suggestions???   Thanks again to repliers!

Software needs to be installed in the OS with which you wish to run it.

Is there a way to move/copy the program from the old hard drive so it can be run on the new operating system?   Please remember I am a novice at this....
Can I run the old OS from the old hard drive using the new laptop board?  If so, how on either question?
If not, how do I retrieve the files or software from the old hard drive?

No. You need the original installation discs or files.

Thanks!   But I should be able to retrieve the files once it is loaded on the Windows 8 OS?

If you mean will it read the files created in W7, then yes.

Am I to understand that means not those created in Vista?   I have assess to a Windows 7 computer?   Would I be able to read the Vista files there and then save them there, thus being able to read them in Windows 8?

Yes, you can read the ones created in Vista too - sorry for any confusion. The OS is irrelevant - it's the program that determines the file format.

If the issue is lack of install CD for the programs, there is another possible workaround. Not elegant, but functional. It requires you have a license key for the older OS and a install CD for the older OS.

The is called a "Hack", but it is not contrary to the copyright and EULA. If the old computer is not usable, and if you have a valid product key, Thee is a painful way to port the older OS onto you new computer and make a dual-boot system. You need a spare hard drive to do some testing to see if it will work for you, In fact, two spare hard drives. you  need a backup also.
In general, getting an old hard drive is cheaper than t getting another computer by far.

Remember., I said this is a "Hack" and you are better off if you can find the install CDs for the programs. If you have the license key for a bit of software, it is legal to install it using a CD you borrow from a  member of .you local computer club. The big  issue is if you are the owner of a license key for the software.

Now as for the "Hack". You install the older OS on another parson. Get is to work. Slave the old drive. make a backup of the Old OS from he old drive. Now do a restore from the backup to the new install of the old OS on the new computer. It will fail to boot right. Now repair the thing with the OS CD.
I said it was a "Hack". Wanda go for it.? Don't blame you if you don't like the "Hack". I don't either. In think it is easier to repair the old computer of replica it.

Otherwise, most programs must be install into an OS. Few exceptions. The dual-boot "Hack" is a last resort.

Will there be any compatibility issues?   If so, what can be done?   Thanks for your help!   Off for awhile...
