    Downloading Google Chrome
    « on: November 04, 2013, 09:58:11 PM »
I purchased a used Toshiba laptop with a windows 7 OS. Everything appeared to be in good condition, but IE will not allow me to download my prefered browser google chrome. I keep getting a window that ask which program I want to use to open the file. I assume IE is the correct one, but when I chose it another window opens and ask if I want to run or save the file. Neither seems to do anything except open the same thing in a new window. Should I chose anther program?

It seems you are having problems with 'file association'. To fix this follow the steps in this Microsoft Knowledge Base article.

    Please post back results.

I followed the instructions exactly and got:
      ERROR:Invalid syntax.
      Type "REG IMPORT/?" for usage.

When I typed that I got:
      ERROR: Invalid Argument/Option -'Import/?'

Don't you get a 'save' option when downloading a file?

Which version of Internet explorer are you using? If you are using 7 or above, reset the internet explorer settings etc.
Open Internet Explorer, click Tools > click Internet Options > Click Advanced Tab > Click RESET. Select "Delete Personal Settings". Click ok. This will reset your internet explorer to the state when you first installed your windows OS.

If you are using Internet Explorer 6.0, upgrade it to minimum version 8.0. A free copy can be obtained from either windows updates or the Microsoft website.

I didn't find a "delete personal settings" setting but did both "reset" and "Restore advanced settings". This isn't just an IE issue. Opening a number of different programs nets the same "open with" window. I think like the first reply said, it is a file association issue. The they suggested may work, I think I have to enter the correct command in msdos. I just don't know what it is.

Did you copy and paste the registry keys in notepad as asked in step 4 of the Microsoft knowledge base article? Save it in notepad, save the file with 'save as' with encoding as unicode. Save the file as "exe.reg". Remember the path where you saved the file. Open command prompt and type the command as given in step 8.
Please follow all the steps properly in the given manner.
