Your sound card may not be supporting them.
      Reinstall driver.
      Check compatibility.
      Check cabling.

Only games and multimedia such as DVD playing software may support 5.1 Not standard Windows sounds.

You will have to find out what works and what doesn't work yourself by trial and error.

What kind of sound card/chip do you have? If not sure, download Everest Home Edition (free at www.lavalys.com) and search under PCI multimedia.

It may be that the chip does not support that enhanced sound option.  That would be kind of like buying a set of nice, new stereo speakers but you only have a mono output from your tape deck. If it can't do it, it doesn't matter what kind of speakers you have.

Just find someone who does and have them download and burn to a CD. You can run it from there and it is a small download.

You could go to Control Panel/System/Device Manager and have a look there as well. That would be helpful.

You can't break anything by looking in control panel/device manager as I told you. What was there?

Open it up again and look under sound and game controller and post what is listed there. You may need to reboot the machine first.
