    D:\ (folder)
    « on: July 03, 2014, 06:33:29 PM »
Somehow, while trying to reroute my personal data to a second hard drive, I managed to make a folder called D:\  . It is up there with Desktop, Downloads, Music, Pictures and Videos, and it will not delete. Tried disk management, and that doesn't show it. How would I delete this folder.

    Leave it alone.
Wait until somebody here understands your problem.
    The expression
      D:\
in Windows refers to a partition, not a folder. Do not delete it.

Why do you think it is a folder?

I built it. I was trying to make a folder to put my data on a second drive, and it wanted a name or location, or something. When I get tired, I have a tendency to do stupid things. I wanted the folder to be on the D drive, so I gave it that name as where to send the files. I was looking at my computer file explorer, and up at the top it was there with the other folders like documents, pictures and such. It does not show up in disk management. It will not delete. It shows to be 1.81 TB free with 279 MB used. There is nothing on the D drive yet, but I somehow got it to having 3 partitions that I can not get rid of. and they are all empty. I gave up and tried to get DBAN to just clean the drive, but never could get the boot menu to do what I set it to.  All I am trying to do is get my SSD to be set up so that I can easily reinstall it if necessary, and put my data on the D drive. I have read forum posts across the internet, and learned how to fix a lot of stuff, but this is something I never would have thought could happen.  I suppose that if there is a way to delete the pictures folder, that would be the way to delete this D folder, but I could not find it.

It is not mapped. It is not shared. It is just listed up there as a folder, and now the actual D drive has disappeared from the list of drives. Not sure how I did that.

Try opening a downsized My Computer window and drag and drop D:\ into it...

I was trying to make a folder on my D drive to put all my documents, pictures and such into. Somewhere along the way, it wanted a name, and I thought it was looking for a name of the location I wanted to put it. I put in D and the rest is history.

Now I have a D drive that is so partitioned up that I doubt it will do much good, if I ever get the D folder to go away.

Are you certain that it's a folder? What is in it? What happens when you try to delete it? If it is indeed a folder you should be able to delete it with Unlocker.

You can download and install Unlocker .Make sure you decline each of those free offers so they won't get loaded on your computer.

I say that it is a folder, because it is listed as a folder up at the top of the explorer, along with pictures, videos and such. There is nothing in it. I was going to look, but I am on the other computer. I am 10 hrs into nuking the d drive that I could not unformat.

if I delete the folder, and it is the actual D drive, but D drive is wiped clean, I should be able to just assign a new D to the drive when I add it back, right?

Anyway, can't do anything with that machine until I finish nuking the d drive. I have the main ssd unplugged so it would not get wiped clean. I'll check back later. Thanks.

                I'm totally confused now....
Why do you need to nuke the D: drive ? ?
                What's on the SSD ? ?
                Where is C:? another drive...or partition ? ?

I may have added a few unassociated details. I wanted an SSD as my operating system drive. I cloned everything from my 2 TB internal drive, which I had pretty much set up like I wanted. I wanted to move the data files to the 2 TB drive that I had left over. Somewhere along the way, I made the D folder and then, in an altogether different problem, I could not get 4 partitions off the 2TB drive. That was a whole nother problem. I had to end up Nuking that drive to get it back to a single partition. (which it is now).  I still have the D folder showing up on the explorer, right in front of the "Desktop", "Downloads", "Music", "Pictures", and "Videos". I call it a folder, because it says " Folders (6)" just before the list of the above items.  Just below that is the bar showing the "Windows C": drive, and now, the "Data Drive D" that I just installed, and the "DVD RW Drive E"

I hope that I have not further complicated the situation. Right now, all I really need to do is get rid of the "D" folder.
