Dual Operating Systems

Is it possible to install two versions of Windows on the same hard drive?  I was hoping to install 98 and 2000, having 2000 for general use and 98 to run old programs.  If this is possible, how would I do it?

Hi Lucas, this is most interesting. I hav been playing ard with dual boot.

Yes it is possible to dual boot win98 and win2000.

1st i have win98 on my harddisk, go into win98. Then insert win2000 cd. let the cd auto run or click on install.exe Then choose install a new OS. win2000 will ask you how much diskspace to divide between win98 and win2k. I have a 6Gb harddisk, and partition into 3G for win98 and 3G for win2k.

If u have win98 installed already, it's easy to dual boot win2k. do read (on the net/books) a bit about partitioning and dual boot in case u r stuck. but my experience is dat is very simple. N remember u r NOT upgrading to newer OS. U want to install a new OS if u are asked during installation.

although half way thru installing win2k my system hang a couple of times. must restart to continue.

once completed, every time u boot up, u will b ask whether to boot into win2k or win98.

See my signature, below.  You can have several OS's, but you need a boot manager.  I use PowerQuest's Partition Magic/Boot Magic.

You do not need a boot manager as windows 2000 as it's own boot manager.

You must put win98 on first, then install windows 2000 on a separate partition to windows 98.  Format your windows 2000 partition as FAT32 if you wish to access files on your 2000 partitition from your windows 98 OS

How will I switch between the two operating systems once they're installed?  Will it ask me which one to run?

Windows 2000 will make changes to your boot.ini file.  When you boot up you just select the operating system that you require
