Programs not opening past background processes

Hi, to start off, I've had this problem for the past month or two and I'm at wits end. A few programs that I've been running have suddenly started to not open past the initial start up phase. I'll go and look at it in the task manager and it will say that its open, but won't do anything and idle around until I either close it or it closes itself.

The program will attempt to keep updating itself but is unable to do so. I've checked my firewall and antivirus and both are working fine and not blocking it in any way. This only happens for certain programs that use the internet or use a client like League of legends, battle.net and others like Utorrent. None of these programs work and get stuck in background processes.

This problem has stumped me and I need any information on why this may be happening.

Operating system is windows 8.1 64bit

Are you able to revert to a restore point to when this was not a problem with your system?

Unfortunately not, there is no restore point a few months back.

This only happens for certain programs that use the internet or use a client like League of legends, battle.net and others like Utorrent. None of these programs work and get stuck in background processes.

What are you running for an antivirus and has this system detected any virus's in the past or none found and quarantined etc?

Also have you ever installed and ran Malwarebytes on this system?

Torrents can be cause of serious problems if anything was able to slip into your system.
