DVD RW drive (D:) problems
« on: December 24, 2014, 09:31:12 PM »
I have a Walgreen’s picture disk with 15 pictures on it from this year and will not be taking any more.  When at the Walgreen’s store, the disk showed the pictures.    But at home I am not able to.  When I go to This PC, I have a DVD RW drive (D:) and a CD Drive (E:) U3 system.  When I open CD Drive (E:) U3 system, I get Launch U3.exe, when I right click and try to open that one, I get nothing (does not open).  When I try to open Launch Pad.zip it gives me a list of long items which I could not copy - some were sandisk format e, pelican extension and a bunch of others.
When I open auto run.inf, I get [AutoRun]
open=LaunchU3.exe -a
icon=LaunchU3.exe,0
action=Run U3 Launchpad
[Definitions]
Launchpad=LaunchPad.exe
Vtype=2

[CopyFiles]
FileNumber=1
File1=LaunchPad.zip

[Update]

When I click on  DVD RW drive (D:)  I get the Title Insert Disk,  under that Please insert  a disk into Drive D, and the disk is in there already.

Then all of a sudden I will get the message entitled Format disk and under that it says The disk is write protected and has a yellow triangle to the left of that.

So I do not know how I get to see my pictures on the disk.  Can someone help me with this?  Thank you.  Anna Ruth

I do not know.  this site so confusing to me.        I jut looked good at the Walgreens picture CD and it is not a DVD,   I do have a  CD drive (E:) U3 system but it will not work on there.   Maybe I should ask Walgreen's for a DV D.        Your site keeps taking me to ads:   http://www.automotive.com/features/editors-picks/2015-chevrolet-colorado-is-the-motor-trend-truck-of-the-year/?dis=9749247C-7166-462F-B963-90CE268C5F50&   grrrrr!

A CD drive will not read a DVD disc...this is likely your issue...

She did mention that the computer has a DVD RW drive so that should not be an issue. It must be something to do with how the images were put on the DVD.

Anna Ruth,

The drive E: U3 system is a "virtual drive" (it doesn't physically exist) and is created when you plug in certain SanDisk flashdrives.  Do you have a USB flashdrive plugged in to one of your USB ports?

That means you should be putting the disk in the D: drive (which is the only physical drive in your system) and then attempting to open that drive from Windows Explorer.  If you have the disk in the D: drive and see the message to "insert a disk" or are prompted to format the disk then there is an issue either with the disk or with the drive itself.

Do you have other disks that you can put in the drive and open?  If so, that means that the drive shouldn't be the problem.  Do you have a friend or relative with a computer where you can try opening the disk on that computer?  If it works on another computer but not yours then it indicates that your DVD drive is the issue.

Are you sure your physical drive is a DVD drive?  A DVD drive can read both CDs and DVDs but a CD drive can only read CDs.  If the disk is a DVD and your drive is a CD, then you won't be able to read the disk.

I found this info on the Walgreen's website:

To copy the images from your Walgreens Photo CD to your computer, please follow the steps below.
For PC:

    Insert the CD into your computer. When you see "Walgreens Photo CD" in the CD-ROM drive, RIGHT click on the CD and select "Explore" (Windows XP, Vista) or "Open" (Windows 7) from the menu.
    A new window will open with two folders inside. Double click the "Pictures" folder.
    Drag and drop your images from the "Pictures" folder on the photo CD into a folder (such as "My Pictures") on your computer. (You can select all of the images by clicking "CTRL" and the "A" keys at the same time.)
    After you have copied the images onto your computer, you can eject the photo CD.

So this tells me that the disk is a CD so it should open regardless of whether you have a DVD or CD drive.  If the disk could be read at the Walgreen's store then things point to your drive being a problem.  As I said above, make sure your drive can read other disks that you have.

Yes, I have two of them.

what I do is go to THIS PC and open it  and see  DVD RW drive (D:), my removable disks F and H, besides local drive c and the CD Drive E: U3
Are you sure your physical drive is a DVD drive? It is a DVD RW drive (D:)

The Walgreen’s disk says on it Photo by Walgreen’s CD.  I went to Walgreen’s again today and was given another disk which their machine could read.   Other disks they had given me their machine could not  read.  Even so when I click on the DVD RW drive (D:) it tells me to insert disk.   Maybe if I went to device manager and uninstalled it it would install it right.    Thanks much for your help!   Anna Ruth

That is what can happen when it cannot read the disk.

You may have a bad drive.  Did you try any other disks as I suggested?

It could be that your drive simply needs to have its lens cleaned.  You should be able to find a CD/DVD lens cleaner disk (maybe even at Walgreen's).  You place the disk in the drive and it has little brushes that clean the lens.  It may not work but the disk is not expensive so it's worth a try.
