Hi,

Im new to the forum.

I just purchased a used computer and the operating system was erased.

I have a copy(not the original) of windows 98 and I am haveing problems installing it.

the only prompt I get is a:\
It wont let me change it to c or d or g

any help on how to get this disk to boot or should I give up?

Please give a bit more detal.  Have you tried booting from a boot disk? Click the link if you dont know how to make a boot disk. http://www.computerhope.com/boot.htm
Are you using to correct commands to change Directories? example just type the drive letter C: on the command line.
Make sure the disk is in the drive.

Do you have an extra HD lying around? Maybe its a bad disk. Being as you got the System used. Throw a different HD in ther and see if you can get it to boot, that will narrow it down to the HD. IF it wont boot to a different HD you have a problem somewhere else.

the drama continues...

I have made progress..

It now says that if I have HPFS OR NTFS on the hard drive, I have to make a partion on the boot disk?

any ideas
