xp will not boot

I have checked all connections.  bios works and I still get the cursor at the top left of a black screen.  I cannot even use f8 for the recovery options any help would be great.   Thanks Ernie.

We will need some details to help. What happened before this? What kind of computer? Anything else that would be helpful for a satisfactory response?
