Windows 10 Upgrade Hangs
« on: June 16, 2016, 06:49:02 AM »
Dell Inspiron 15R N5110. Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. BIOS updated to version A11, drivers and programs updated. I used the Media Creation Tool and chose Upgrade this PC. The upgrade gets to the "Checking for updates..." part and hangs at 22%. I left it at 22% for almost 2 hours yesterday afternoon before trying to close it out. I got the "Program not responding." message and used Task Manager "End task" to force close it. This was while using my friend's Internet (AT&T UVerse DSL, not my Sprint cellular WiFi hotspot). There are now 2 new folders on C: drive. ESD and Windows10Upgrade. Can I restart the upgrade from inside the ESD folder (setup.exe)? Is there a way to skip the check for updates?

Yes, I am trying to upgrade the laptop to Windows 10. I know Windows 10 will run fine on it. I've upgraded 2 similar ones so far, an Inspiron 14R N4010 and an Inspiron 15R N5010. Windows 10 upgrade installed and runs perfectly fine on those 2.

Thanks, Patio. I was hoping to avoid having to do a clean install. I didn't want to have to go through reinstalling the programs and etc. I'll keep this open until Windows 10 is successfully installed and activated on the laptop.

Download the ISO file here:  https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/techbench
Burn it to a DVD or USB (using Rufus).
Run the setup.exe file from Windows.

Accepting an executable from a stranger is an unwise course of action, especially if they get pushy about it.

The safe way to move to Windows 10 is to install from USB or DVD onto a separate partition. Apparently it is legal. I have both Windows 7 and Windows 10 on this old Dell GX-520.

And I have made backups before I installed Windows 10 just to be on the safe side. I have even used the Windows 10 recovery tool to fix a problem and the Windows 7 install was not damaged. The are on separate parsons on the HDD.

The down side is that I have to re-install my other software over again. But that is not so bad, just takes time. So far, I find there are recons to do some things in Windows 7 and other things in Widows 10. Having a choice is not so bad.  8)

If the Windows 10 installation was installed using the Windows 7 key, then you are violating the EULA.

You could also post a direct link to where that file can be acquired from Microsoft, though it's likely the file they are already using which was causing the original hang. If the file you want to provide isn't available from Microsoft, then I would question it's legitimacy. Being able to post a virustotal report is meaningless.

    Reference? Your EULA or mine?
