Old Hardrive that I want to copy all possible data off of.
« on: January 10, 2017, 03:38:43 PM »
I have a Conner CP3044 drive. http://www.computerhope.com/hdd/hdd0036.htm
and a usb to ide adapter. I am running windows ten and I want to copy the data off the drive.
It should be formated FAT16, and probably has an install of DOS4.0 on it. How can I get to the contents of the drive.
Drive management says it is not initialized. I clicked X and left the drive uninitialized.
Any thoughts?

Booted into linux, no such luck, didn't give me anything.
Fustrated I told disk management to try to initialize the disk, and it said the disk is not ready.  I will try it in an old pc sometime tomorrow.

Do you hear the drive spin up?  Do you hear the heads seeking or any other noises?  If not, double check that you have power connected to the drive.  If you can hear it making noises, then double check your data connection.  Double check the jumpers are correct.  If you still can't access it, the drive electronics may have failed.

If the data is critical and you are willing to put in the effort, you could try buying a known working model of that drive from Ebay or other source and swapping out the PC board from the good drive to the one you are trying to recover.

I don't believe Win 10 supports FAT16 .... You might want to use a 32-bit OS system like XP to access it through the USB/IDE adapter.

Personally if the data is needed there's no way i would trust any adapter to retrieve the data...
Put it in a desktop PC that has IDE slots/cables if you really need it.

Windows 10 Supports FAT 16, it is the "FAT" File system. I have older SD-Cards which use FAT-16, as well as a 50MB Quantum ProDrive from 1987 which I can still see the contents without issue through a USB Enclosure.

My guess is that the adapter might require LBA support or a minimum ATA standard. Enclosures and of course motherboard Connections tend to have much wider ATA support.

Or, of course, the drive itself could be hooped.
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.
