Learning Java ™ as your first programming language is a good idea.
As you know, the standards for Java ™ are set by the Oracle company.

Do you  like to learn by:
    • Classroom instruction.
    • Reading a book all the way.
    • Using actual code samples.

You can find lots of stuff on-line. Most are free.
Here  are just  a few resources.

Java is a simple, object-oriented, network-savvy, interpreted, robust, secure, architecture-neutral, portable, high-performance, multithreaded, dynamic computer language.

    That should help you.   :)

Also to add to Geeks list ... Youtube has some great tutorials as well.  TheNewBoston has some that I have watched on Java and other languages. Usually I am fast forwarding through stuff that I already know, but there is lots to learn on Youtube for free. There are videos for complete beginners all the way up to advanced.

One last place to mention is that MIT has open courseware. I have followed through courses they have up for the world to learn from and best part is that its all FREE  :) https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/electrical-engineering-and-computer-science/6-092-introduction-to-programming-in-java-january-iap-2010/index.htm
