usb problem

my HP pavilon  computer uses windows 98se and has usb ports but whenever i trie to use anything on them the device says usb conected but my computer doesn't find the usb port or the item i trie to use.

Check in device manager and see if they are functioning. These are USB 1.1 I presume?

i checked the device manager and it said that the usb ports are working fine but it still doesn't detect anything i try to use in them. how do you tell if it is usb 1.1?

What shows under USB in device manager?

And what model Pavilion is this? If it came with less than WinXP it's sure to be 1.1, and even with it might only have 1.1

Obtain the drivers for the USB ports that came with the mainboard CD
