fundamentally, there is no difference, not to the average, lay man, run-of-the-mill PC usage demands.
whatever ports are available on the monitor determines which equivalent port (hence cable) you use on the PC.
having said that....
if you want 4K, or higher than normal resolutions, or audio as well as video, then you start getting interested in HDMI, or DisplayPort, or DVI.
let Google be your friend in further research.
for me, I run a dual head system, one is HDMI, the other DVI.
but my previous setup had one DVI and the other VGA.
it was only with increasing my screen sizes that I benefited from changing cables/ports.
