Need some advice
« on: December 27, 2005, 11:07:15 PM »
 ???
I have a presario 5000T-5bwm2a
Windows ME (YUCK!)
192RAM
700 MHZ CELERON
APproximately 65 GIG HD.

My pc started freezing up recently whenever I went to any site that used flash media on their pages. Now it seems to be locking up on any site with animation or if i try to navigate to other pages or click on links.
I have tried different versions of flash players with no success. I have factory restored the system that didn't work, I even tried factory restoreing with win 98 SE os factore restore cds.
I have fdisked and completely reformatted (fdiskmbr-deleted partitions-created and formatted the new one) my hard drives and using factory restore cds (win 98 SE & Winme) but the pc still has the same problem and often times freezes, first thing after clean install on windows/pc registration screen.

I have even flashed the bios.

I know I need a new Pc but can't afford one right now and I believe it is a motherboard and/or video chip and/or processor issue.
Anyone have any advice on what i can do to resolve this constant freezeing/locking up crud as it is becomeing almost impossible to use the machine.
Thanks

Fed

    1) Test your RAM.
    http://www.memtest.org/
When executed, the downloaded file will create a floppy for you. All you have to do then is boot to the floppy in A drive and lets it run for a few hours to see if it shows any errors.
    2) Stick to 98SE.  ;)

The machine was made in 1999 or 2000, I know a hardrive was made in 2000, not sure about the motherboard and rest of it. I got the pc brand new in 1999 or 2000.
I have 1 stick of 128mb and a stick of 64mb=192, I think the onboard video uses a mb or 2mb.

The hard drives are in fine shape.
I am going to run that memory tester as soon as I can.
If you have any ideas let me know after i run that memory test and if thats not the prob my guess is bad video chip, motherboard,or processor. I like my Pc and am broke so hope it can be fixed.

    Fed,
I ran the program you recomended and left for about 3 hours and wouldn't you know it my pc apparently froze after the program ran for 29minutes and 57 seconds but it showed no memory errors. I am frustrated and stumped-thank you for the suggestion though.

I don't fool much with ME so I can't tell you how to do it, but if you check the performance of your RAM, I think you will find it low. You can install more RAM or turn off some programs and services running in the background.

I have two sets of factory restore cds for my pc with win me on one and windows 98se on the other. I have tried using both operating systems but still the freeze occurs and it freezes instantly on websites with flash content.
What is weird is this only started about 3-4 weeks ago but I changed nothing on my system.
I have noticed my system seems to be using more memory than usual even with only essential programs running in the background (this occurs with either operating system).
I don't know if throwing more memory at this problem would help as the memory tests fine and the system always worked great till about 3-4 weeks ago. I am thinking maybe the processor or mother board is going kaput.
Any ideas guys as I have an older system and hate to buy memory and then am suck with worthless memory and a screwed up pc. :-[

It is a PreSorryYo. Just kidding. It sound as if you might be suffering a hardware failure. If you have a clean install and the problem still exists, something may be going out.

You either have a bad memory module or you have an over heating problem. Booting from the memtest floppy does not access the HD. Can you check your system temps? Have checked to see if all the fans are running? Is the heatsink clogged with dust?
If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything.

          Could you have a virus?
I realise you have re-formatted many times but you can catch a bug in no time at all now.
It seems to only have a problem when connected to the net?
Does it run fine when not connected to the net?

More RAM will not resolve this problem. Save your $$$$ on that idea, but try the tips posted and let us know.

personally id say the onboard video controller is dying or your RAM is or yeah the system bus on the motherboard is breaking down.
firstly clean your machine free from dust make sure none is around cpu heatsink and fan. if u still have the problem after this then its one of the above 3
heh ive trashed newer machines than this at work.
