W10AU? Do ya want Windows 10 April Update?
« on: May 23, 2018, 12:07:18 AM »
It was a disaster for me. What about you?
(I herein call it the W10AU.)
Just now, late in May, some publications are saying bad things about the W10AU
Here a re a few of the recent comments:

Every time some portion of the userbase encounters issues with an upgrade or update, the tech press comes out of the woodwork with articles about how terrible it is. And those articles are rife with comments about how "it was never like this with Windows Current-X! where Current-X is some previous release.

But that's nonsense; because it was always like this. Some small portion of the userbase is unfortunately going to be afflicted by rare issues. It's been the case pretty much with every version of Windows ever released.
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

I've so far done the v1803 upgrade on 4 PC's in the house - no worries at all.
went to do it on mine only to discover my Intel SSD 600p has a known bug and if the upgrade had of worked there are chances of the system not restarting.
so I even liked the hardware check Window 10 upgrade does first saving me all that potential bother.both Intel and MS are working on a fix for the known issue.
couldn't ask for more than that.

I also installed the update on three desktops and two laptops at home with no issues at all. As is the case after every such update, I had to reset the system environment variables for temp folder locations to my personal preference, delete old system files, optimize the drives, and create images of the system partitions (pre and post installation). Because of the process I choose to follow the upgrades took several hours each, but as I said above, no issues encountered.

Absolutely no problems whatsoever, just like I never had any problems upgrading to Windows 98, 98SE, 2000, XP, Vista, 7, (skipped 8), 8.1 and 10 (all updates). My old Dell D-830 laptop has, since 2015, taken Windows 10 12 Insider Builds so far with no problems. As for Geek, a Windows update won't fix your flaky hardware.

Yes, I did. So my problem made things hard on the update.
I will try again on a more stable machine.  :-[

I forgot to mention MS-DOS 5, MS-DOS 6.22, Windows 3.1, Windows 3.11.

Geek...no offense...but you originally installed Win 10 on a 40 G HDD...those are kinda old...then you tried on an even older HDD...and you messed up the dual boot enviornment...then you moved on and re-did it again...Just sayin.

The problem PC is my Dell 755, which I got refurbished on eBay .
Patio, I now have Windows 10 on a 500 GB hard drive that has passed the standard tests.  The drive is partitioned so I can have more that one OS and have a partition to store my personal stuff. I also have another 500 GB drive to use as a backup.

At this point it seems to be stable. I am not  sure  what was the problem. I tried four different hard drives and could not isolate a problem on three of the hard drives.
The bad hard drive has been retired now. It was not the 40 GB.
I am going to  clone the PC  hard drive in my Dell  and try the April Windows 10 update  again.  :-\

***************
My other PC is a newer Gateway with a  64 bit version of Windows 10. I did not subject it to the April update. I am going to wait before I do anything to harm it.
The Gateway  does not have any problems.
(Except the problems ones I create myself.)  ::)

Both the Optiplex 755 and the Dimension 755 are affected by the manufacturing problems of electrolytic Capacitors of the time period. I wouldn't expect "refurbished" to mean they inspected board components very thoroughly.

I had a dimension 755 which was affected by them and experienced very unusual behaviour for some time before it would simply seize up a few minutes after boot (even in the BIOS)

Thanks for the tip, BC.
It is an Optiplex 755 and is presently running both Windows XP and Windows 10.
There is no visible sign of capacitor failure. But that has little meaning. Electrolytic capacitors, even in best conditions, have a limited life. I may have to stop sing it.
Still,I am going to try one more time to see how Windows 10  does on it.

As I said, the newer Gateway works fine. But I don't want to use is as a 'sandbox'.
So the old Dell gets to be the test box.
I will try the Windows 10 update next week.  ;D
