Dsc files on my memory card...help!
    « on: September 14, 2018, 11:09:12 PM »
I have a memory card that was given to me by a family member after my mother's death. It has many cherished photos that I would like to be able to view and share with my siblings. I cannot for the life of me find any information anywhere about how to view, download, convert, anything!!!! The only thing I found was Nikons View or something like that, and I tried to install it twice and it didn't work either time. I just got an error message saying "unable to open...". I am beyond frustrated! Please tell me there is some way to access my photos!!

How are you looking at the card? Is it in a card reader connected to a computer?

Yes, it is a 4gb PNY card, I am using a Targus adaptor connected to my tablet. I have tried opening the files in Google photos, but no luck.

You need to look for files with a .jpg, or .bmp or .raw extension. From Nikon's support site:

What is a dsc file and how do I open a dsc file?

A DSC file contains information about photos taken with a Nikon digital camera. Such files are saved on the memory card along with the image files but do not contain any image data. DSC files may be hidden on the card since they are referenced by Nikon's digital camera software and not meant to be opened manually.

It may be that there are not any image files on the card, they may have been deleted or the card may have become corrupted. Are you quite sure there are image files? Maybe you should speak to whoever passed the card to you, to find out its history. Have you got a PC you can connect it to?

Try using RawVision available from the google app store for android tablets. There are other apps for windows and apple devices. This assumes you can see the files on the tablet. If you are intending to email or posting the images on the web it is better to convert(from a copy) to an easier format for others to open like jpg. To do this on a PC there is this program.

I can't see them. I am unable to access them at all. I will try the RawVision, but the Nikon apps are totally useless. I tried downloading the one their site claims is specifically for dsc files and that wouldn't open either.

Salmon Trout: #1: Dsc files are image files. So yes, I am sure they are. And obviously, if I could somehow change the file type to jpeg or gif, then my problem would  magically be solved, right?!?!? And lastly, when I go to file manager, it clearly shows there is 512 gb of image data there. Now I will admit that I know nothing about these types of files and am not great with this tablet either, so I am probably doing a lot of things incorrectly. But there are only dsc files, at least from what I can see.

Lisa_mated: I went to download RawVision, but that is for photo editing??? There is nothing there to open or convert dsc files  to a format I would be able to access????? I am so confused, lol!

            Mark.

that screenshot shows one DSC file of 512B (that's bytes not gigabytes).
so that is either the world's smallest image or not an image file at all. :)

and the DCIM (digital camera image) folder only lists one image - so I'm not sure where all your images are?

Salmon Trout: #1: Dsc files are image files.

Some confusion here, possibly? As I understand it (I owned a Nikon Coolpix camera until the charging socket broke), Nikon cameras save shots (images, pictures) taken with a file name that starts with DSC for example “DSC_0001.JPG”. The extension is the dot and what is after it (in this case it is .JPG). Also, however, Nikon saves "picture information files" with a .DSC extension. e.g. "NIKON001.DSC" These contain information about image files also on the card.

            Quote
Nikon .dsc files serve the purpose of identification of a memory card volume as belonging to the camera. Some Nikon software may refuse to process volumes without a valid .dsc ID marker. An .dsc file does not contain any images, nor does it contain any EXIF or other metadata in regard of images present.

The DSC file is just a file used by the camera to store metadata, the actual photos will be in the DCIM folder. Inside DCIM there will be a single folder (probably has a name along the lines of 100NIKON) and that folder will contain your images.
