Is there a limit on START MENU items?

I've been running Windows XP on my computer for, maybe, 14 years. 

Lately I've been getting an error message when I click the START key that says it' doesn't have enough room to show all items.  There's plenty of physical space, so I'm thinking it must mean the number of shortcuts to programs.  I've tried deleting obsolete items, but I'm still getting the message.

Is there a limit on the number of items the START key can handle?  Is there some other way of finding the shortcuts it's decided not to show me?

Thanks for your reply.  I don't see how that addresses my problem.  The section of the page you linked to talks about instructs how to change the number of 'most commonly used shortcuts' are displayed on the left side of the start menu (in Figure I).

My problem isn't with the most commonly used programs, but rather all programs, that is, the "All Programs" link at the bottom of the Start Menu.

Am I being dense?  Did I miss something?
