You can't use a mobile (external) hard drive instead of a notebook's internal hard drive. to install Windows on. With some external hard drives, you can open the case and get the drive out, if it a regular SATA drive, and is 2.5 inch size, and put it in the notebook, but some USB external drives have the USB chip soldered on and cannot be used this way.

First, make sure that your replacement drive has the same physical size as the drive that's in your existing laptop and uses the same interface. The good news is that almost all laptop hard drives are the same size and use some form of a SATA interface.
