    Updated list of software "must-haves"?
    « on: January 22, 2019, 12:17:44 AM »
I remember CCleaner being recommended heavily a few years ago, but it seems that has changed. So, what software do you consider installing in your rig now?

Didn't expect this to blow up. So many hidden gems I haven't heard of before. Thanks guys! I will try to edit in your suggestions in the OP to provide quick reference for those who might stumble upon this thread.

Copy pasting the OP of reddit threads should probably include some effort to remove edits that make you sound like a chestnut.

What is the OP talking about?
    I take it he meant:
    "list of software must haves".
But that is still much too brad. Let's suppose he has Windows 10 nd if he wants mostly free stuff that is not already in Windows:
Browser: Google Chrome (Even Microsoft likes it.)
Cloud Storage: Dropbox  (But windows 10 already has a cloud service.)
Music Streaming: Spotify (Who needs it?)
Office Suite: LibreOffice . (But you still can get Apache Office, if you like it .)
      Security: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Yes.
Media Player: VLC  No, WinAmp is better.
Screenshots: Nothing, it is already Windows 10
Compression:  PeaZip (Who needs it?   Windows 10 has it.)

So, most of the above are not really needed at all.  8)

OP here copy pasted a post from another forum. That is why they have part about "Didn't expect this to blow up" despite having zero replies.

Geek... was wondering why WinAmp is better than VLC?

I've been using VLC player for years and even have it on my android devices to play media there as well.

I use both VLC and WinAmp.
The skin of Winamp is adjustable and has almost all controls visible, if yu want.
For me, it is easier to edit the playlist in WInamp.

I use VLC mostly for video and WinAmp for a list of MP3 files.

VLC has a bug with the album cover. Once it gets an album cover, it will not change if the next song has an association with a new image. Very annoying. Some MP3 collections have images that go with each song.

What software is a must-have is a personal thing, and I find these days I think long and hard about what I really need. However on a new build/install I would get these things:

      Code/text editor: Scite or Geany
      Video/music player: VLC
      Video encoder: Handbrake
      Archiving: 7zip
      Browser: Google Chrome and Firefox
      Image backup: Macrium Reflect
Luckily my employer gave me a deal on Microsoft Office 2013 (9.99 UK pounds, about $13 US).
