    Just go ahead and setup a gmail account...
    When you sign up for the VPN it protects the whole PC...including gmail.

          gmail connects using https. The data is stored on Googe's sever. I haven't heard of any Google security breaches recently. A VPN would just hide your connection to gmail from the ISP hosting your connection. That's what it's for.
