Problem with CD/DVD drive
« on: January 27, 2006, 02:55:56 PM »
Last night I attempted to watch a DVD on my Dell Inspiron 600m laptop but without realizing it the disc wasn't completely snapped onto the spindle in the disc tray.  I closed it and naturally it jammed up.  Without  turning the computer off, which I realize was a mistake, I did the paper clip trick and popped it open.  Now the drive won't open or recognize CD's when I pop it open and put one in there.  The little green light on the tray still flashes so I'm guessing it still gets power.  I would appreciate any help.   By the way, I"m running XP.  Thanks.

A shot in the dark, try re-booting.

I've rebooted several times but to no avail.  My buddy had the same type of DVD drive in his comp so I popped it in mine and it worked fine.  Do you guys think my drive is just shot?

You could have damaged it if you REALLY jammed it in there. The fact that a different drive works make this one suspect.
