Volume Control Mute

 :-?  On Volume Control, Mute button is checked and am unable to uncheck it, thus no sound.  System troubleshooting says sound card is working properly.  How do I get the mute button unchecked, or is there a problem elsewhere?

Computer: Gateway Solo 2500, Win 2000 -  sound card - Neomagic 256av PCI located on extended IO bus.  Thanks for any ideas.
