OUTLOOK - READING PANE

I am having a problem with my reading pane in MS Outlook. (using W10)

When I select a reading pane option (usually to the right) I get the egg timer and the Outlook programme switches off. Keeps on happening!

So I can see messages in my ‘Inbox’ and can open them, but I can’t see their content (before opening) in a reading pane.
