My hard drive makes a continuous sound that sounds like a cow going moo , about every three or 4 seconds; has anybody got any idea what this may be?...the computer still works fine while this is happening but it does sound like it may be dying . Please help .

Have you scanned for viruses and Spyware? When did this start? Have you made any changes to your system recently?

i haved cleaned and defragmented the c drive and deleted some music and pictures to free up some space but hard drive is still moaning away.

How did you determine the noise was coming from your HDD and not another component?

I've known my share of old cows.

One thing I have noticed is that many people call their computer... 'My hard drive', so I wanted to make sure we weren't being led up the wrong track.
Patty probably has a noisy fan,... I could be wrong. LOL!

I haven't tried any free diagnostic software yet but i can say that the noise is comming from deep inside the hard drive.I don't think it is the fan becuase you can also hear a quiet steady hum of wich i assume to be the fan.This is deffinitely a sound that also sounds like someone snorring.If nobody has had this problem it sure isn't common and maybe its just on its death bed.Thanks for the tips anyway; i'll let you know if i ever find out what it is.

Is it an ExcelStor drive and does it sound perhaps more like a sheep than a cow?

I might simply be due to resonance inducing a sound in whatever the computer is standing on or something nearby.

On the other hand it might be resonance in the casing itself in which case you should see if the drive retaining screws are firmly tightened.
