Duncan/Mac/Merlin, can we please keep the discussion on the subject of computers? Look, I know I've been harsh in the past, but if your posts stay on-topic, I'd be more than happy to have you around. You do know a lot about computers, I know from the thread in your sig. If you can talk about that instead of world events, I feel that CH would more than welcome you.

i only ever back up if something is wrong with the pc or i am going to attempt to do something that might cause it to die. otherwise i dont really back up anything.

To backup, you should use imaging software such as Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost. A True Image license is 50 bucks(I don't know the price of Norton Ghost; I don't use it) and worth every penny in the event of a hard drive failure. It makes a complete image of your hard drive such that when a failure occurs, you simply replace the old drive with a new one, run the True Image boot cd-rom, and apply your backup image to the new hard drive - Good as new in less than an hour. Contrast that with hours upon hours of reinstalling software and maybe not saving your data before the hard drive goes completely. Put the images on an external hard drive and you'll be able to examine the images with another computer that has True Image installed.

If your data means anything to you, you'll find a way to backup. If your time means anything to you, you'll image your hard drive while doing your backup.

If your personal data means anything to you, you'll keep it seperate from your OS and programs and back it up seperately.

well, i put never because i dont back up on a regular basis, but whenever i'm about to defrag or make any changes, i backup. but i'm such a slob i usually lose the disk

I used to use CDs for backups of files, but I would store them in a perfectly logical place, but I would forget I had them lol

Hello all,
I'm a newbie - sounds kinda spacy
On backing up
I just lost my whole collection of ballistics and pyrotecnical documents somehow.
Talk about suckin. Thought I had backed it up. I had a need to mix up a batch of Thermite.

Did yet another install of XP.
So, meesa bin tinkin bowt dis backin up ting a lot lately.
I was wondering if any of yalls ever came accross a program or used a series of programs to build a Windows install CD with everything the way you like it on it. All the software, everything./b].

I've got some ideas and I'll admit I surely haven't finished with my reasearch yet but if anyone knows off the top of their head say some freeware program that handles that then shout it out.
Seems like that would be the way to go if you were re-installing.
I pretty much keep all my stuff synchronized on another drive otherwise.

Acronis True Image is what I use. Norton Ghost is used by others. It takes a few minutes to fully restore a drive just how you like.
