Windows movie maker error

How come when i go to import a video into my collections, it says so and so "is not indexed and cannot be imported"?

I've never really used movie maker before. So, this is the first time i've seen this problem

Basically, iirc, unless the files are Windows compatible - ie they play in a bog standard Windows Media Player with no external codecs, Movie Player won't be able to use them.
