Some sites won't load correctly
« on: March 26, 2006, 08:22:12 PM »
I just bought a computer that was reconsigned (I think thats what you call it when you buy something that was returned). Anyway when I go to some sites the images don't load or on some the links to download stuff don't work either.

this site here doesn't load right. Check it out then look at the picture I uploaded (sorry its so small... Photobucket shrunk it because it was too big, but you can get the idea of how messed up it looks for me)
http://www.xbox-skins.net/

Or there is this site:
When I click on the "Download Now" it goes to another screen that says this:

-----------------------------------------
In order to keep people from making direct links to maps in our map database we check the http_referer header sent by your browser to verify you are following a link from our website whenever you download a map.

In most cases this method works fine - but some Norton Users have reported having trouble when trying to download maps from our site.

The following steps should solve the problem and allow you to download maps from the site without compromising your system security.

    * open up your norton internet security firewall software..
    * choose options..
    * choose the internet security option
    * in the dialog box that pops up choose advanced options..
    * click the add site button..
    * add dfbarracks.com
    * highlight dfbarracks in the list then choose the privacy tab
    * under browsing privacy area.. change referer to permit
    * make sure the checkbox for use these rules for dfbarracks.com is checked.

If you follow the above steps Norton will allow your PC to pass the http_referrer along to our site without compromising your system security in any way. This will not alter the behaviour of Norton Internet Security Firewall for any other sites that you use.
---------------------------------------------

I don't have norton installed so what could be the problem.

And on Gamespot.com I can't watch any of the game trailers.
I have tried these sites on firefox and on internet explore and they won't load.

I hope someone can help.

Edit: I have windows XP Service pack 2.

The http://www.xbox-skins.net/ site looks the same in my browser as yours, so I think the site is the problem, not our computers.  I'm sure my system is working fine, so I consider that site a piece of junk.

"When I click on the "Download Now" it goes to another screen that says this:"  What site are you talking about?

"And on Gamespot.com I can't watch any of the game trailers."  Exactly what are the game trailers?  What links must be followed to get to them?

Opps I forgot the link to the other site: http://www.dfbarracks.com/mapdb/index.php?action=dm&mid=16805

The gamespot video not loading was actually firefox's problem.

But I went to this site: http://www.xbox-skins.net : on my other computer and it showed up fine.

Another thing that was making me mad was. On hotmail sometimes when I reply to a message it asks me to type in the characters in the image, but when I click ok it logs me out, and when I try to sign in again it asks for the characters again, and over and over. So I can't get back to hotmail unless I go on my old computer and type them in.

So theres obviously something messed with my computer.

or on this site: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/sl1m1thy/wormsguide/roper.htm : I used to be able to watch the videos but now the are still images (Click on a word under beginner then a video will apear beside it). Its wierd because I could watch them a month or so ago then it just stoped.

I have AVGfree virus scanner and Zone alarm firewall. I use other stuff like Spyware doctor and spybot Search and destroy. I also use : http://www.trendmicro.com/hc_intro/default.asp : for finding malware and other stuff.

From the X-Box site:

We apologize for the recent problems with the downloads section and the forum. At first, we thought it was a server problem and tried to fix it by reinstalling several server scripts. When it did not work, we restored a site backup made on 5th March 2006. Unfortunately that led to a number of recent submissions being lost. We would be grateful if the contributors can submit the files again. We will be monitoring site closely for any future recurrence.

The other sites (And the X-Box site at the moment) display correctly as far as I can tell.
It may be worth your while having a look at this thread.

Just for the info: I fired up my old Win 98SE machine.  http://www.xbox-skins.net displays OK on it, but still does not display properly on my Win XP machine.

http://www.dfbarracks.com/mapdb/index.php?action=dm&mid=16805 displays fine on my Win XP PC.  I can also see the little videos on http://homepage.ntlworld.com/sl1m1thy/wormsguide/roper.htm.

I also have a laptop computer with Win XP.  I can see http://www.xbox-skins.net OK on it.  So, or some reason, my main rig, like yours, does not like that website.
