internet explorer - not responding
« on: March 19, 2006, 05:01:06 PM »
Hello,
Recently I have encountered a rather large problem with my internet explorer.  When I launch it, it almost always "hangs" and eventually when I try to refresh or back out of it, it gives me the "not responding" and I have to "end task."  I know this is a problem quite often associated with spyware.  I have run Ad-Aware SE and alsao microsoft anti-spyware.  I don't have Spybot S&D and it is difficult to get as I can be on the internet long enough to download it.
Also, it seems that there are an awful lot of applications running at startup.  Could anyone provide me with a list of .exe that should be running?  And could someone let me know how to stop those that should not be running at startup? My computer is a Dell inspiron 600m and I have Windows XP service pack 2.  I know this is a lot.  I sincerely thank anyone who tries to help me!
thanks,
willie

What kind of internet connection setup do you have? Did you do your malware scanning in safe mode with system restore turned off? What antivirus are you regularly using? Ad Aware and MS stuff is NOT good enough.

You can download those programs on another computer and burn to CD for use.

Have a read for the whole drill:

I am always running a Norton anti-virus which is current and up to-date.  Also, the MS spyware is always on guard.  My internet connection is a broadband highspeed internet (ADSL @2m).  I am not sure about system restore being on or off.  Where would I find this?  Thank you for your help.  I am off to check the link that you gave me.
thanks again,
willie

System Restore can be found by right-clicking on teh My Computer Icon, and clicking on Properties. A small window will appear. Click on the System Restore tab. Tell us what it shows. Also, if you want to know what is on your startup list, I suggest downloading HiJackThis and posting your log here. You can download HiJackThis by following this link: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html ... If oyu have any questions let us know  ;)

Thanks for all of the help.  I will get all the programs that you have recomended.  I will post the HiJack This log in a post as well.  This may take a day or so because I will need to get it from someone else's computer on to a cd.  But, thanks for all of the help and the speed of replies as well.
