computer shuts down during scan

when i run norton av my computer shuts down before scan is complete, same thing when i run spybot. trend micro is not finding any virus, neither is the northon online security check. when i boot up i get a trend micro system notice of a js_fortnight.m virus but nothing is finding and eliminating it. any ideas out there?
