What is the motherboard make and model? What does www.crucial.com say you need for RAM exactly and what did you get exactly? (Not just speed - everything!)

Obviously your previous RAM is fine. So download the memory tester (free) at www.memtest86.com boot with the  floppy it makes and test just the new stick for at least an hour. If that is good. Then put in all 3 and test that for an hour. Any errors?

The RAM may well be fine, especially if new, but is incompatible with your motherboard or existing RAM. Post the info requested and we'll come to a conclusion.

well i took out all the ram chips and just put in the new 1 gig chip. Everythng works fine when it is by itself. I dont get it. They are both made by the same manufacturer. The other 512 chip works fine with others. Do you have to have the chips in any particular order?

Historically, the largest chip in slot 0 (nearest the CPU). The crucial page lists the characteristics for a 1 gig. RAM as :

DDR PC2700 • CL=2.5 • UNBUFFERED • NON-ECC • DDR333 • 2.5V • 128Meg x 64

Is that exactly what you got?

You posted:
1GB Ultra PC3200 DDR 400 64MX8 2.5V ep

Crucial does not have the cheapest RAM, but it is reasonably priced, lifetime warranty, fast shipping and guaranteed compatibility. I can't imagine why anyone would shop elsewhere, but check all the details. As I said, speed is not the only factor, just one.

It does sound like a compatibility issue.
