Windows XP SET PATH

I have the following problem:

I set the path in autoexec.bat (for example set path=%PATH%;c:\Program Files), and when Windows XP loads, and I try to see the PATH in prompt, it doesn´t show anything.

What could be happen?

Someone had this problem before?

can you explain what are you trying to do....install winxp >running a batch file?more info....
