Taskkill-like for Windows Xp Home?
« on: August 14, 2006, 06:06:21 PM »
Is there another way to "kill" a task? I can't stop the pop-up blocker!! I can't open the task manager window and I can't even right-click exit the firewall icon in the right bottom corner since it's no longer there...it was there...but I know it's still active. can anyone help...

What version of Windows? Doesn't Task Manager allow you to do this? (Ctl+Alt+Del)

It's windows Xp home edition and no task manager can't...ctrl+alt+del isn't working, and right-clicking the task bar and then clicking task manager isn't working either...

Click Start > Run. Type TASKMGR and click OK.

If Windows Task Manager does not start, try logging off as a limited user and logging on as an administrator.  If you still cannot start Task Manager, either someone has disabled this in the Windows security settings or a virus is to blame.

you can download pstools from sysinternals http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/PsTools.html. inside this suite of tools is pskill and pslist.  Open up a command prompt, use pslist to display a list of processes on your machine, and then use pskill <pid> to kill the process.

Please heed the advice that if you cannot get into task manager you have major problems and I would suggest a format and reinstall in your future.  ;)

Is this a real Windows with SP2 and all updates? What are you using for malware protection?

I concur with GX.  If it is not a virus and not Windows security settings, there is corruption of the operating system.

    Good call, GX!

I tried the "Click Start > Run. Type TASKMGR and click OK" and it didn't work... I downloaded the pstools and pskilled what I tought would stop the pop-up blocking but nope it just sorta cutted the link between internet and my web browser... and yes my windows is legal but since i'm on a dial-up connection running at 58k.. well updates have been kinda neglected so I suspect updates to be the major problems... but since my computer is on it's death bed well let's just say hellloooo FORMAT! but I can't find my boot disk :[  but thanks for the help .. and the pstools are pretty cool, I don't know when i'll be using them though but i'll keep that in mind if I get in some trouble. PsTool! GO!

You don't need a boot disk for XP. Just insert your CD in the drive and restart the machine.

You do have a CD, don't you?

    Pow:

Right, the newest computers from HP (which bought out Compaq) do not come with System Restoration CDs.  However, the installation files are saved to a separate partition on your hard drive, and you might have the option (it would be on your Windows Start menu) to create a set of System Restoration CDs or a pair of System Restoration DVDs.  You will only be allowed to do this one time, however, so if you have already done it once and lost the CDs all you can do is purchase a Windows XP installation CD.  When the non-Beta version of Windows Vista comes out, you might be able to get a full-installation Windows XP CD cheaper on eBay.

Sorry we could not cure what ails your PC.

What is the name of the program?  We can look it up and advise you on how to completely remove it in a safe way.
