Win ME ~ The case of multiple HELPCTR files
« on: August 22, 2006, 05:52:47 AM »
 :question
Has anyone experienced in Windows ME (because I understand this can occur in XP) multiple instances of HELPCTRs opening.
You only know they are there, because nothing seems to work very well. Looking in the CLOSE PROGRAM box reveals many instances of this open. They usually occur when the computer is left alone for a while. (Perhaps it's bored?)
At the same time a win management app opens. (Sorry forgot it's name.)

I read once someone getting this, but it actually opened the many instances of the HELP screen, which was caused by a sticky key on the keyboard.

When I do a search in the Windows folder, there are several versions of HELPCTR there. How many do I need?

Fruitless scouring of MS for this as they have abandonded ME.

I also remember having to plead with MS for a patch to correct another anomoly with ME, which was thousands of empty files in the INF folder, which were created when installing new HW.  I have the patch if anyone needs that one. [smiley=wink.gif]
