Windows 98SE format and install question
« on: August 22, 2006, 09:49:12 PM »
Is there one way or another that is better to use, to format and re-install Windows 98SE.

I have found a few different ways to it do on search engines.

But now it has gotten confusing.

I have tried using this

link

But I can't get past here.

You may already be at the CD-Rom prompt, if not type "D:" and hit enter (that is assuming your CD-Rom letter is D:  ). To confirm where you are type "CD WIN98", if the directory changes you are in the right place, if not try "E:", repeating the process, and continuing up the alphabet until you get to Win98 folder. In the example below it is "D:\WIN98".

I keep moving up the alphabet for CD Rom letters and nothing happens.

Thanks,

Travel to bootdisk.com and DLoad a WinME bootdisk...insert a fresh floppy and let it finish.
Re-boot with the floppy you just created.
This will take you to a DOS screen with an A: prompt...
Type "format C: /u" without the quotes and hit Enter.
When it finishes it will ask you about a volume label...hit Enter for none.
Power down remove the floppy and have the Win98 CD in.
On re-boot Win98 setup will begin and you should be good to go.

I had tried to do a patch over install with the 98SE disk. It did not solve the issues.

Is this link crap? I have used this link for XP Pro and it worked.

I downloaded the ME OEM bootdisk from bootdisk. Is the right one?
I saw there were two different ones.

For the sake of trying to learn something, what does the ME bootdisk do that allows the different way to format and re-nstall 98SE?

Too late to try it now. Will have a try later today.

Thanks,

You can load ME with a 98SE boot disk, but I would not try it the other way round. There just is no need.

You need a win98 boot disk with cd rom support. During the boot process it will tell the drive letter of the cd rom. There will also be ramdrive which will contain the necessary utilities. You can fdisk and format, then run the setup from the cd.

    OK

I did make a 98 boot disk while doing the, I'm assuming what is called a repair install.

So use it and use the link I mentioned. But follow the "Reinstall Windows with a boot disk and from the hard drive" section?

    Thanks,

The only reason i suggest the ME bootdisk for this method is the FDisk version in ME doesn't have the 2G barrior as does the 98 version...

    98SE has a 32 gig limit for a partition, not 2.  ;)

I wound up using another link for info.

I had to fdisk first to get this computer back going. I was not aware I had to do that. This computer had two partitions on it.

    I am still learning.

But anyway I got it ands it is running now.

    Thanks for the help.

I had missed the link here. I don't have much luck searching here. I'm probably just not doing it right.  :-?

But as I'm always reading, Google is your friend.  But it was before I joined this site. I just hardly knew what to do with it then.  ;D
