Would a P 3,  800mhz processor work for XP Ho
« on: September 08, 2006, 10:21:18 PM »
I was wanting to know if in the real world a Pentium 3 , 800 mhz would work good, or just so so, for running XP Home SP2?

I have seen the required specs for XP Home and it says 300mhz minimum.

The computer this may be loaded in has the Pentium 3, 800mhz processor, 30gb harddrive, 256mb of memory.

    dl65,

    Thanks for the quick response.

My sister was given this computer. It is an older home built unit. Asus P3C-E motherboard. It has 98SE on it, just reloaded, and re-setup. She is now wanting a newer OS.

She was thinking of going up to ME at least. But heck I have seen you can get XP Home for not very much more.

I told her I would check here to see if it would run without problems.

She is going to up the memory to 512mb, it will take 1GB.

    Thanks,

Avoid ME like the plague. It is just Windows 98 with a few more frills... not worth the money to "upgrade" such a short distance.

I'm running XP Pro on an 800MHz PIII with 512MB of RAM. Works great. It is a little sluggish compared the GHz machines I've used, but nothing to cry too loudly about. With the help of a 256MB ATI 9600XT graphics card I can play some fairly graphics intense games with acceptable speed. Trackmania Nations and Lego Star Wars run nice and smooth.

XP Home will be just fine on that setup.

The 512 RAM will certainly make it more enjoyable, but Win2000 would, in fact, be a downright speedster, even with 256 RAM.  ;)

The 2000 I have seen is a expensive as XP Pro.  :-?

I have looked quite hard at it.

Is it safe to buy software from the online stores? As long as they have the COA
      and valid product key?

      Thanks,

It's certainly safer with Win2000 as there is no activation scheme to make it work.

No version can be legally downloaded.  ;)

I have never bought an O/S online but have seen OEM versions just the O/S without the fancy box & instructions for $50.00 look around & check eBay.

And no surprises. It would have an unused registration number, be genuine, and returnable if any problems, backed by a great company.  ;)

Patio, academically priced software is for students and educators only.  Most college bookstores ask for proof of status (student or faculty ID) before approving purchase.  Anyone not meeting the requirements is an illegal user.

I have came across a new Windows 2000 Pro. It has the startup guide, COA and product key.

      It is Dell branded.

Would it work on this home built computer?

Some OEM discs look for the appropriate maker's BIOS before they will install but you will know this early on if you attempt it.

If you have the materials already go ahead and try.

        Update-

I got the Windows 2000 SP4 installed in my sisters computer about a week ago.

        Seems to work good.

I had never seen Y2K before, just heard of it. Its seems a good mix of XP and 98/ME.

She is jumping up to 512MB of the PC800 memory. I am ordering her that here shortly.

        Thanks,

I am running Windows XP SP2 on a 300Mhz/128MB RAM Compaq Laptop.

I suppose it runs quite well for something that slow.  :)

Windows 2000 is NOT windows 98/ME. It may look like it, but it functions differently.
